Mosses

Mosses are common in Central Texas as they are in most other areas. Many can be observed associated with limestone ledges with its moist habitat. Springs, seeps, river banks support a diverse moss population. Several kinds can be found high up on the bark of trees; other types seem to prefer the trunk of the tree near the ground. Some mosses have a preference to dead wood. A few species can even be found under water. Many kinds can be observed on the soil especially in winter and early spring. Some mosses persist throught the year mostly in a dry, shriveled condition waiting for the next rain. Others must germinate from the spore each year and are only temporary. Downtown areas have an interesting moss population occurring mainly between the cracks in sidewalks and other similar habitats.
