This moss is very dark when dry and rarely occurs in continuous mats (see top left image). The top middle image displays the moss while dry in sporophyte production. The capsules are submerged, not extending much beyond the leaf tips. The top right image views the moss under wet conditions to better display the sporophytes.
The image to the left displays one entire moss plant with both gametophyte and sporophyte visible. The right image shows how the moss branches in its growth pattern. The points of branching and below are nonliving.
