Concinodiscus - A Diatom

The first diatom was collected near Kodiak Island Alaska on 26 Nov 1998. At this time of the year diatoms are relatively rare, but are extremely abundant in the Spring and early Summer months. The second image is of a top view of Coscinodiscus (from Texas) that has been cleaned and mounted in a media of high refractive index. The skeleton of diatoms are composed of silica and possess designs which can be seen in this image.
